For the 2026 Global Desk Setup Contest, Shenzhen-based tech reviewer Xingqiliu transformed an ordinary rental room into a dark, moody esports corner. His approach is refreshingly simple: spend where the payoff is biggest, and that means the walls and the floor. Felt acoustic panels cover the walls, a triangular array of Nanoleaf tiles replaces the main ceiling light, and LED strips run along the back edge of the desk. The result speaks for itself in the photos below.

Start With the Walls and the Floor

Swap the main ceiling light for a Nanoleaf array to set the room's whole mood from the wall.

The logic here is easy to borrow. In a rental you can't rip out fixtures, but you can cover surfaces. Felt sound-absorbing panels do double duty as insulation and decoration, wrapping the whole corner in deep grey so the lighting reads clearly against it. Nanoleaf triangular panels, arranged in freeform clusters above and beside the monitor, take over from the main light entirely — the whole room runs on ambient glow.

The rug follows the same principle. It's a peel-and-stick style mat, so it can be torn off and repositioned as the layout grows. For renters who need to restore a room to its original state at any time, that flexibility matters more than any single piece of gear.

Clear the Desktop by Moving the PC Off It

The single change with the biggest payoff: the tower doesn't live on the desk. It sits on a rolling side cart instead, which frees up a large stretch of uninterrupted surface. That's why the main workspace stays mostly empty — just the keyboard, mousepad, mic arm, and a few small trays, with everything else pushed to the edges.

The PC itself gets its own little stage. Blue ring-lit fans and an MSI graphics card glow behind tempered glass, parked on a white drawer cabinet next to a poster of vintage tin robots. A DualSense controller rests on a charging stand nearby, and an Apple poster plus a glowing 'RELAXED' sign fill out the right-hand wall.

Editor's Notes & Summary

"Small changes, big atmosphere" — that's how the builder puts it, and the photos back him up. Get the walls, floor, and lighting right first, and the immersion follows on its own.
