Mario Botta MOMA Architectural Model

Product Overview

This concrete architectural model is a miniature interpretation of the Mario Botta MOMA building, created as a creative piece for desk and shelf display. Its compact, geometric form brings a landmark of modern architecture into everyday spaces such as an office, studio, or study.

It comes in gray and brick red finishes, each available on its own or with a solid wood base for a warmer, more grounded presentation.

Historical Background

• Commission: By the 1980s the museum had outgrown its original quarters, and in 1988 Swiss architect Mario Botta was selected to design its first purpose-built home in San Francisco's South of Market district.
• Opening: Construction began in the early 1990s and the building opened to the public in January 1995.
• Design: Alternating bands of red brick and gray granite, a bold geometric composition of cylinders, cubes, and stepped forms, and a central atrium crowned by a black-and-white striped cylindrical skylight.
• Scale: Approximately 225,000 square feet of space.
• Expansion: The 2013 to 2016 expansion by Snohetta preserved Botta's building, whose atrium, staircase, and skylight remain the historic core of the museum that reopened in May 2016.
